Department of Public Works Job Description

Posting Date: October 30th, 2021

Position: DPW Worker-Full Time.

Hours: Full Time, Monday-Friday with possible on call and weekends (overtime over 40 hours).

General Description

Perform all necessary tasks including manual labor, equipment operation, and work associated with the repair, construction, maintenance, and operation of the village road system, water treatment and distribution system, storm sewer system, facilities, parks, grounds, equipment, and rights-of-way. Work may require long hours in adverse weather conditions. Knowledge and proficiency in the use of heavy equipment and handheld power tools as required. Employee may be required to work in high places, below ground, and in confined spaces; lift heavy objects, manually or equipment assisted; work with exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals (with proper safety gear).

Supervision

Work will be performed under the general supervision of the village president.

Essential Job Functions

  • Water System: Water testing and accurate reporting to comply with federal, state, and local requirements; hydrant flushing, system mapping, locating, and marking valves; turn off/on service; water system repairs including mains, service lines, valves, generator maintenance; attending required training; cleaning of water facilities; and other tasks as assigned.
  • Road System: Inspect, repair, and maintain streets and alleys including: patch potholes, crack seal asphalt, maintain road shoulders, grade gravel alleys, trim trees on plow routes, sweep streets, plow snow, ice control, remove storm debris, install, and maintain street signs, spray weeds, operate various types of equipment in a safe and responsible manner, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Facility Maintenance: Inspect, repair, and maintain village facilities including: painting; minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC maintenance; roofing repairs; concrete repairs; inventory management; cleaning; sanitation; mowing, weed trimming, and snow removal; and other tasks as assigned.
  • Park Maintenance: Inspect, repair, and maintain park facilities and equipment including: mowing, weed trimming, tree trimming, snow removal, snow hill construction, preparation for special events, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Storm Sewer: Inspect, repair, and maintain storm sewers including: catch basin cleanout and repair, drain tile repairs and replacement, grading around catch basins, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, repair, and maintain the equipment fleet following original equipment manufacturer and industry standards including: oil change, grease, cleaning, diagnosing, minor repairs, adjusting, welding, fabricating, painting, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Right-of-Way Duties: Inspect, repair, and maintain the village rights-of-way including: mowing, grading, leveling, sidewalk repair and replacement, tree trimming, leaf removal, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Safety: Maintain and operate village equipment and facilities to comply with MIOSHA and village safety standards. Wear proper PPE when performing tasks requiring it and maintain a clean organized work environment free of hazards.
  • Record Keeping and Scheduling: Maintain accurate records and scheduling for all water system testing, equipment maintenance, training, time sheets, equipment rentals, project estimates, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Training: Attend approved paid training to maintain proper licensing and certifications or strengthen skill set.
  • Communication: Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to openly and effectively communicate with the village president, council, village residents, contractors, vendors, and others in the conduct of village business.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • EGLE D4 S4 or higher Water System Operators License.
  • CDL B with air brake endorsement.
  • Basic knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance or related construction and repair of the road systems, equipment, water treatment and distribution system, storm water systems, facilities, parks, and rights-of-way.
  • Basic knowledge of the operational capabilities and requirements of a variety of automotive, medium, heavy, and power-driven equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications. 
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently with minimal instruction.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively both independently and with others.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT drug test and submit to random drug testing.
